Last Sunday our family grabbed lunch at a local diner after church. Afterwards when I got in my truck to head home, something was wrong. I was pushing down on the accelerator, but my truck had no get up and go. It was peaking at 20-30 mph.
Now my truck is at the shop getting fixed. Preliminary diagnostic testing indicates that there's a problem with the fuel system -- most likely the fuel pump. The fuel pump is what sends the gas in the tank through the fuel system into the engine.
I had plenty of gas in my truck, but apparently very little of it was making its way to the engine. If my fuel isn't getting pumped, it's not going to do me much good.
The same is true in the Christian life. Each believer has within him the power of the gospel (Rom. 1:16), the living and active word of God (Heb. 4:12), the invigorating strength of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 3:16). Yet despite these unlimited resources within them, some believers make little to no progress in their Christian life.
That's because Christian fellowship is God's fuel pump for Christian living. As we meet together and motivate one another to acts of love and good works (Heb. 10:24-25), the Holy Spirit revs up our engines and gets us moving together in the direction that God wants us to go.
So, let's keep that in mind as we gather for worship each Lord’s Day and at other times throughout the week. Come consistently and participate actively for the sake of pumping one another up spiritually.
